The Apostasy is foretold in scripture (1 Tim 4:1-4, etc).  It began even in Biblical times and gathered momentum over the centuries.  Their purpose for moving away from the Biblical pattern would have seemed reasonable to them.  But once you leave what the Bible says (1 Pet 4:11) you initiate the "Law of Unintended Consequences", also called the "Butterfly Effect."  What started with something seemingly small-- ends disasterously centuries later.
